Dignified help with personal care

Activities of daily living (ADLs) — bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, and moving safely around the home — are where most families first realize a loved one needs real help. These are also the most personal tasks, and who provides them matters.

The caregivers we refer for personal care are credentialed HHAs and CNAs with the skills and experience to help your loved one remain safe at home. Every referral is background-screened and credential-verified before an introduction — and you decide who you're comfortable welcoming into your loved one's most private routines, because dignity depends on trust.

How Caregivers Help with Daily Living

From morning routines to bedtime, caregivers assist with the personal tasks that become harder with age, illness, or recovery.

  • Bathing, showering, and personal hygiene
  • Dressing, grooming, and getting ready for the day
  • Toileting and incontinence care
  • Safe transfers — bed, chair, wheelchair, and car
  • Standby support with walking and fall prevention
  • Meal preparation and help at mealtimes
  • Medication reminders and daily routine support
  • Overnight assistance and morning/bedtime routines

Signs It May Be Time for Help with Personal Care

These changes usually happen gradually — until one event makes them impossible to ignore. It may be time for hands-on help if your loved one is:

  • Avoiding bathing or showering because it feels unsafe
  • Struggling with buttons, zippers, or getting dressed
  • Having accidents or difficulty getting to the bathroom in time
  • Needing help getting out of bed, chairs, or the car
  • Recovering from a fall, surgery, or hospital stay
  • Relying on a spouse or family member for lifting and transfers

If any of this sounds familiar, our team is happy to help you find the best path forward so your loved one remains safe and comfortable at home.

In-Home Care Questions, Answered

For hands-on care, the State of Florida requires specific training and skills to safely provide it — which is why we refer credentialed HHAs and CNAs. Every individual is background-screened and credential-verified before an introduction, and you decide who cares for your loved one.

This is one of the most common concerns, and experienced caregivers handle it with real skill — building trust first, respecting routines, and preserving privacy at every step. It's also where good matchmaking matters most. You may request a male or female caregiver, someone your loved one shares a language or background with, or simply a personality you know they'll warm to — tell us what matters, and we'll factor it into the match.

Yes — safe transfers are a core part of personal care, and often what family caregivers need help with most. A spouse shouldn't be lifting alone, for both people's safety. Keep in mind that transfers and lifting are considered hands-on care, requiring specific training and experience — at least an HHA or CNA. Some situations also call for adaptive equipment like a Hoyer lift or sit-to-stand lift to keep both client and caregiver safe. Companions and companion-only services can't provide this type of support.

Absolutely — the goal of in-home care is supporting every aspect of living independently at home, and the caregivers we refer are credentialed and experienced in exactly this kind of help. The same caregiver can help with a morning routine, prepare lunch, handle light housekeeping, and provide company. You decide what's included.

You'll see a wide range of rates depending on location, hours, and level of care. Be cautious of services that won't discuss rates until they've visited your home — too often that visit isn't about evaluating your needs, it's about evaluating what you can afford to pay. We do it differently: we're upfront about typical ranges, and a phone consultation is free. Call us and we'll give you a clear picture for your situation.

Often within 24 hours during the work week — the real timeline depends on how quickly the key pieces come together: documents, payment arrangements, and your caregiver preferences. Once those are in place, we can make a match. That said, this isn't a perfect world, and emergencies happen. If you're facing a crisis — a fall, a hospital discharge, a family caregiver who's burned out — call us and we'll prioritize your search. In urgent situations, care can be arranged in as little as an hour.

We're a matchmaking service, and we like to say you don't marry the first person you go on a date with. While we work hard to find the best fit the first time, that isn't always possible — you can request a different caregiver at any time, no hard feelings, no hassle. The right personality match matters, and your feedback helps us identify better candidates for you. We'll keep working with you until you find the right fit.

Medicare generally does not pay for ongoing private caregivers. Long-term care insurance often does once the policy's benefit triggers are met, and Abby Services helps with the documentation insurers expect.
